Space-Saving Furniture

Rating:★★★★
Category:Other
While reading the paper yesterday, I came across an ad and the link to a website for the Knightsbridge Residences in Makati.

http://www.knightsbridge.com.ph/mypodunits.html

I have no plans of getting a unit (it's expensive!), what got me interested was the single room design for their Pod Concept. I liked the idea of having the bed in a loft above the "living area". It's a great space saver for a studio type apartment. (The reason why it seems more expensive. For the price of their lowest rate at about 22K per month, I'd rather get a three-bedroom house. :) )

But seeing that ad, reminded me of some of the really functional space saving interiors and furniture that I browsed over the net some months ago. So, I found the links again to share them with you.

http://resourcefurniture.com/space_savers/index.html

The first is something I found on NotCot. It began with a sofa, a sofa that can transform into a double decker bed. :) Their site also contains photos of their other interiors where closets turn into beds with a pull or two in twin or queen sizes. There's also a video somewhere in there as well. The concepts for their interiors are very practical for small spaces, knowing those affordable condos in the city only give you a tight space to live in.

http://mein-casulo.de/en/concept.htm

The next link is something I found while Stumbling. It would be great to be able to feel at home wherever you go like Mary Poppins. She has everything in her magic bag. The Casulo concept brings to life that exact idea, except it's a whole set of furniture for an apartment that fits inside a box. They've developed the mobile furniture based on the mobile lifestyles of people these days. It's pretty handy if you get relocated a lot. But what I like about this concept is how things from inside a box fold out into furniture you can live in. :)

There are a lot more space-saving interior ideas out there, these are just three. I just love those clever solutions that allow you to keep organized.:)

I need help on my alphabet - UPLB Alphabet

There's the Christmas Alphabet, and that cute song that goes, "A, you're adorable; B, you're so beautiful..." so why not a UPLB Alphabet, right? :)

I've made up this alphabet, that's the letters of the English alphabet, corresponding to landmarks, monuments, or places here at UPLB.

But I need some help. I'm still in need of a Q, X, and Z in UPLB. So, if you have anything in mind, please comment to this post. It would be a great help. :) My heartfelt thanks in advance! :)

Sushi Day

Rating:
Category:Other
I was looking for some sushi recipes on the net today, and I came across this site:

http://sushiday.com/

I guess the site gets it's last name from the last name of its author, Ms. Allison Day. But that's just a guess. :) For someone who makes sushi in her free time, this is alot. She's got lot's of sushi recipes. It goes to show that you can put almost anything in between some rice and a nori wrapper.

I like that the site is filled with great photos of sushi. It has a relatively simple layout, but its the photos, the recipes, and the short stories that come before them that make Sushi Day interesting. You get to know a bit of the author or what she's up to lately within the post. But then, its still all about the sushi. :)

Zip-it Bags

Rating:★★

i remember that for a time those zipper purses - the ones that were made entirely out of zippers sewn on together - and those bags with big zippers were a bit of a fad.

http://www.uzipit.co.uk/index.htm

i guess people in the UK are a bit late in bringing that idea to our shores. but nonetheless, its a great concept that i'd like to try and make myself sometime. i like their zippers, its not too big. and i like the concept of having a strand of zipper zip up into a bag. its pretty handy.

saw a stall of Zip-it Bags at MOA. i think it was the "le gym" bag that cost about P11,999. its a great concept, that also asks a great sum of money (its about a bit more that what i earn in a month! ouch!). i wonder how long that stall would last there...

Moleskine

another planner post... of sorts.
If you're feeling philosophical, narrative, or artistic, or if you simply have a bucket of great ideas that spills out every so often, maybe you'd like to try putting them on paper the way the likes of Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, or Ernest Hemingway did way back once upon a time.

http://www.moleskine.com/eng/_interni/storia/default.htm

the Moleskine notebook is also a great find i came across at Fully Booked.

when i was at the Fully Booked store at MOA, there was this guy who was nice enough to actually recommend the brand to me. i didn't catch his name though, but he carries a Moleskine reporter's notebook in his pocket - for the great ideas that just pop up wherever. it's a better choice over the bigger ones, because they're not so portable. it's leather bound, so it's protected against the elements - even in your back pocket.

http://www.moleskine.com/eng/_interni/catalogo/Cat_int/catalogo_notebooks.htm

although this is also a kind of notebook that i feel should have the best ideas - and best handwriting - in it. a simple ruled soft notebook costs P495.

this is sort of a planner post, because Moleskine also has a wide range of planners. they call them diaries.

http://www.moleskine.com/eng/_interni/catalogo/Cat_int/catalogo_diaries.htm

what i like about this is that they have a planner for you whether you like seeing your days in months, or weeks, in different formats too.

BTW,
if you're a sucker for school supplies like i am, (or if you like graphic novels) you'd love the basement of Fully Booked at Bonifacio High Street. that's where they stash all their designer school supplies... notebooks at least.

so, i've started the hunt for the perfect planner...

http://www.peterpauper.com/sub_cat.php?cPath=26_80

last weekend i came across these portable and very pretty planners at Fully Booked. although, they come at a very pretty price too: about P675.

but if you do like that chic stlye to a weekly planner you can bring with you in your bag, this could be a good option. its also a great gift to give a fashionista friend.

the planners are well made. if i remember, the cover is a laminated matte finish, complete with an elastic garter to keep the pages together. the pages are smooth to write on.

the thing about these planners, parang nakakapanghinayang sulatan... ang ganda kasi, parang madudumihan pag sinulatan ko na. :) heheh!

the link leads you to the Peter Pauper Press website. i did have some shots of the planners in my phone, but my memory card broke down before i could post.

Fred and Friends!!! :)

This is something I absolutely love!! :)

http://www.worldwidefred.com/home.htm

I've found their products scattered all over the web: on notcot, i think some on thinkgeek, and on some blogs. too bad i can't find any of them in the stores here.

they're pretty expensive though, being designer items and all. but they're just so clever and functional that its worth it.

i'm a school supplies person, so you'd guess that i'd like the paperclips - drip clips, iconoclasps, and the talk bubble. i also like the kill time activity book. the equal measure beaker is gonna be useful in my kitchen, and the here hook on my wall, near the you are here mat. :) i also liked all the ice cube makers - cool jazz- .. i mean ice makers, 'coz they're not just cubes at all.

how obvious is it that i want to get my hands on them? :)

here are the other things that caught my eye: (i want some of these too of course)

delete fly swatter
foot in the door
manhole mats
barcode mat
tea lights
holy toast
romeo and julienne chopping board
to do tatoo
luckey bottle opener
inanimate stickers
jesus look at the time
xposed
beer belly belt
revenge
pick your nose disposable cups
tooth picks
S&P salt and pepper shaker
good chemistry salt and pepper shaker
sweet tooth
ouch toothpick holder

love! love! love!
It's also actually very inspiring to see products like these. It gives you a cue to think out of the box. Enjoy!

Maria of Stickers and Donuts features an interview with Yasmin of A Print A Day

She grew up in Manila. She used to work for Lisa Frank. She posts a print a day and awesome downloads on weekends. That's enough to get me drooling.

http://stickersanddonuts.com/2008/09/02/print-a-day-intro-interview-part-i-of-iii/

Maria of Stickers and Donuts got the chance to interview Yasmin, the genius behind A Print A Day blog, which she shares with all of us in this tree-part feature.

I find the interview very inspiring. How many times did I say "wow!" while reading it? Alot. LIke Maria said, the coolness doesn't stop coming. :)

Check out Yasmin S.' blog: http://aprintaday.blogspot.com/ to get your dose of print inspiration for the day. This is definitely a fab find! :)

School Supplies

I'm a sucker for school supplies. I can spend hours in a National Bookstore just checking out the office and school supplies section.

I used to get really excited at he start of the school year because we'd be shopping for supplies, which was the perfect opportunity to get my paws on a batch colored envelopes (instead of those plain brown ones, although i love brown paper), black blu tack, craft scissors, blue binder rings, wooden peg clamps, and purple staple wires to name a few.

That's why i got pretty exited to read this article by Tricia, the new columnist for Stickers and Donuts. This debut post of hers is a must read for those who love school supplies like me.

http://stickersanddonuts.com/tag/school-supplies/

I especially liked her feature on pens, and I couldn't help but notice the cute prints on the pencil cases she reviewed. I like the tofu cubes, they're happy.

Although, I doubt that I'd find most of the stuff she featured in stores here. Like Jung, I'm not into online shopping. Too bad. This article makes me want to write a local version. Pilot Pen anyone?

VOTE! Care! and Give a Damn!

Last Friday I went on a night out with some random friends. It was a good night out, something I haven't had for a while. :)

Sometime in the night, I remember the group talking about the USC Elections and the Plebiscite to amend the USC Constitution. Then they looked at me and gave me a teasing stare, "Naku, Admin 'yan. Sa admin 'yan nagtatrabaho," and pretended to talk among themselves. :)

Hindi ako nakpikon, and I know it was a joke. :) But I'd like to share with everyone concerned what I told my companions last Friday: BY ALL MEANS, DO VOTE!

I remember being an apathetic student. It didnt matter to me then that I was.

Working for the administration, though, has made me see that there are different aspects to the problems that we face in UPLB. It is not so much the portrayal of "students versus the administration".

Now that I know more about the issues, it feels dumb to not have known about what's going on in the University as a student. So, don't be like me.

If its anything that the adminstration would like to say, its: CARE! Care about your University. And, VOTE on September 10 and 11!

That's it. Oh! and sa mga kasama ko last Friday, Thanks for the company! :)

Design Your Life 2009 Planner

I get to hear it alot often again lately, "Haay, magpapasko na...". It's already September, one third of the year has already passed and before we know it, the next day we way up to will be the first day of 2009. So, how early is September to get your own Design Your Life Planner 2009?

http://cnsdesigns.multiply.com/

I came across this while Multiply-hopping last Saturday.

They say that you're in charge of your life, but this planner takes it to a new level by allowing you to take control of your planner too. They've done the layout in bright and happy colors and fun designs. I like the feature where you can put your own photos into the planner and the one where you have pockets for your loose papers---> I've got lots of those.

The designers of the planner are Christine and Sheryl. I like the way they've designed their site, especially their logo. :) They've also designed an all-occasion gift box. Check out that smart idea too by clicking the link to their site.

The Design Your Life Planner looks like a pretty life-book to have for the next year. Although I'm gonna watch out for more planners to come out as the year ends before I actually take my pick. ;)

PS. I have a feeling I've seen the 2008 planner before also in a Powerbooks store.... I wonder if this is it...

Found this page while I was hopping through Multiply the other day.

http://printees.multiply.com/

I just love the welcome message on her site. It reads: "Life is a great big canvas; throw all the paint you can at it." Very inspiring! :)

Her shirts are made to order, so they always have stock... and you could have custom-made statements done too! I especially love the "Meow!" tee, its absolutely adorable! I'm a cat person, by the way. I also like the inspiring message on one of her bags: "GOD is a disk jockey, LIFE is a dance floor, LOVE is the rhythm, YOU are the music." I'm also thinking of getting the "Heart Halves" couple shirts for us, it reminds me of that sun henna tattoo we had one good febfair ago.

Must save! must save up more! :D

Another noticeable feature on her page is the section for "Bad Trip Buyers". I like this part. I agree in saying businesses, especially small and medium ones like these, shouldn't take bad trip buyers sitting down, 'coz they're really bad trip for business. :)

The day I discovered NOTCOT... was the day I discovered myself.

Ok, that may sound too deep and poetic for site praise. But it very much describes my road to discovering absolutely great fab finds on the web!

This is definitely the internet age, and I find myself actually surfing the web now more than I used to. There is just so much to see that I can't really keep up! And I'm not just talking NOTCOT here.

There are dozens of cool sites that gather features on awesome finds for everyone else's pleasure. There are individual sites of photographers, designers, organizations, products, businesses all over the web. Even here on Multiply there are profiles that are worth a visit or two.

I used to be a really crafty person. Seeing these great things on the web, make me want to get my "workshop" going again. I suddenly want to learn more about designing, and I've revived my dream of putting up a business someday. And it feels damn good! :)

I like being inspired, and I want to be inspired.

So, from now on I'll be keeping tabs on the things that motivate me right here on Multiply, so I can share it with all of you great people. :) Do feel free to comment and give your two cents worth on the things I post or share any fab finds you may know of. I'd love that.

Before I begin, let's get the stars right. I love stars, by the way ;).

* If it makes my list it's a star already.
And the more giddy I am about it, the more stars it gets...

An Article About Agressive Packaing in the NYTimes

I'm a sucker for creative packaging. Usually, something in the store that catches my eye, usually catches my wallet too - if its affordable of course - , even if it isn't something i need at all. I also find myself clicking links to products with good packaging in NOTCOT.

Lately though, I've also had a need to do some research on packaging and creative packaging. I came across this article in the New York Times about how product packaging these days changes more often now than before.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/10/business/10package.html?_r=1&ref=business&oref=slogin

The article presents some pretty cool ideas that I'm looking forward to see in sodas, beer, soap, and tissue in the near future. But it also gives us something to think about as we shop in the stores.

Philippine Freebies, Promos, Contests and MORE!

http://boy-kuripot.blogspot.com/
This is (boy-kuripot's ) blogspot. He posts information about freebies, promos, and contests that he's collected over the web, found in advertisements etc.

There are some promos you've seen already, but what makes this site interesting are the one's you never knew existed.

It's no harm to try, and as he has proven, you can win in these things by actually joining. :) Think about it, when you say, "sana manalo ako sa lotto", tumataya ka ba? :P

I've done some contest-hunting myself (see my posts of mostly designing contests), but this guy has packed a lot more interesting things to join. You can also check out his multiply site. He's also a bit of a businessman with some unique items.

from 100% Grape to 100% t-shirt design competition

my first Artwork shirt was a purple tee that read: 100% Grape. i bought it at the Landmark once upon a high school in the days that Artwork had no outlets and their shirts were a lot thicker. it was Artwork who brought the statement into the statement shirts of today. since then a lot of start up ventures for uniquely designed t-shirts have come out. a lot of them you can find here in multiply.

its only recently that i've found out that they're having a shirt design contest. i'm gonna try my luck with this one *crosses fingers*. apparently its been going on for two years now. i know a lot of you like designing shirts or have your own crazy shirt concepts in mind. there's a P80 registration fee though, but there's really nothing to lose. :)

supreme concern for the environment may call on your lucky stars

i would join if i was an enrolled student. but like alot of opportunities i've passed because i'm not an enrolled student anymore..., i should probably just tell those who can join about it.

found this in the paper last sunday. apparantly i've discovered that the sunday edition of the Philippine Star has alot of these contests lying around in its pages. although i prefer the jobs section of the Philippine Inquirer, i'm not exactly actively gonna be looking for a job till october, so i guess its ok.

versions of me

like i said, i have a new mission in life of sorts, or maybe you could call it a new collecting hobby. i'm collecting versions of me by different artists. :) you can contribute if you like, i'd be glad to receive your drawings :D

background story: in fourth year high school, troika, keithly gave around these forms that we filled out. it included this space for a self-portrait. and because yours truly has no talent at drawing, she drew a figure that resembles the first image in this series.
it's been my trademark since...

great day! :)

I'm having a great day today for alot of reasons... (some of which i dont exactly need to enumerate ) including this rockin' cartoon illustration of myself by Manix Abrera, author of Kiko Machine (the comic)!

this illustration is very kiko machine :) heheh. rak en rol! he drew this on cyrus' copy of Die! Die Evil! Die!

I'm beaming with happiness right now. Something I haven't felt in a really long time. Thanks to everyone who made my day (including Mr. Abrera). And because of that illustration, I have a new "mission in life" (of sorts): to collect drawing versions of myself. I have two at home drawn by my artist friends, which I'll post soon hopefully and my headshot.

Get your own UPLB Planner for Academic Year 2008-2009

the photos were just taken with my phone's VGA camera... tsk

Get your own UPLB Planner NOW!

P60 at the Office of Public Relations (OPR), 2nd Floor Administration Building.
They're also selling it around campus (don't know where though) and I think at the College Secretaries offices.

Yey! it's finally out! It came out bit late for the actual start of classes, but not too late. After all classes have just begun here.

This school year's planner is spring-bound which better holds the pages together and makes it easier to flip. Although, I still find that the spring makes it a bit difficult to write on the back pages.

The planner (like last year) contains lots of handy information such as a profile about UPLB, important telephone numbers of UPLB offices, a campus map, the list of UPLB officials, a key guide to the codes for lecture halls and classrooms (which specifically indicates TBA means To Be Arranged heheh), and of course important dates to remember from the academic calendar.

Having a planner that follows the academic year instead of a physical year is a great idea for students. It makes it easier to note, schedule, and monitor what you're gonna be doing for the school year, especially when classes get cut for breaks. I wish we had these when I was still a student.

Having a planner that caters to the UPLB student, makes it a great plus: dito lang sa UPLB meron n'yan.

Reflecting real-world relationships

I was able to watch this interview on ANC last weekend...

‘We put a lot of emphasis on connecting with people in the real world’

They weren't exactly asked the questions I was looking for them to answer, but the interview stressed the importance of reflecting real-world relationships on this very ingenious media-sharing merged social networking site :)

Bookworms want Load

I was ranting on my first post today about teleco network promos. Here's another one I found in the paper last Sunday. :)

If you've got a particular favorite line from a book you've read, why not try to send it in and you may win P1,000.00 worth of Globe call cards. Nothin' to lose...

I'll be copying the paper verbatim now... (its not like I'd have anything else to add):

"Join the Philippine STAR and Globe's My Favorite Line contest. We will choose two winners who will get P1,000 each worth Globe call cards.
Text your favorite line to 0915-874-2725 with your complete name, the title of the book you got it from and the author. The contest runs until December 31, 2008. Prizes may be claimed at the STAR offices, 13th corner Railroad St., Port Area, Manila. Call 527-7901 to 15, locals 119/120, to make an appointment. Look for Kathy Moran of Boy Suerte"

Design a Metrobank credit card for a Canon Powershot A470

Also found this in the paper last Sunday.

Philippine Star - Metrobank DesignMyCard contest

It might just be the ticket to getting myself a digital camera - that works much better than the one I have right now (Kodak EasyShare C443). :)

Note to self: remember this phrase "You're in good hands with Metrobank"... something to work a theme around.

UP + camera phone + Smart = UPiktyuran Na!

UPiktyuran Na! with Smart: UP Centennial Smart MMS Photo Competition is now on!

I found the full-page ad in the Philippine Star last Sunday and looked up the site today. I think I saw just a couple entries submitted so far.

The UP Diliman College of Mass Communication partnered with Smart for this promo, so thanks for that. It's a pretty neat project for the Centennial :)

The good news: its open to all UP constituents; students, alumni, faculty and employees, no matter what campus you belong to, wherever you are in the world :) It's actually very good news that they've included all campuses here. I'm beginning to get ticked off at the notion that Diliman is the only UP.

This reminds me of an article I read in the Sunday Inquirer Magazine about the Smoke Ban in the UP Campuses... the author wasn't able to include UPLB in the list of campuses she listed. (sorry couldn't find the link for you)

The not-so-good news: Of course, only Smart subscribers can send their entries. :) Too bad I'm not a Smart subscriber... yet. I wonder if they could have tied up with Globe for this... Another sentiment that I have is these promos and features are so network-based.

One instance: you have a phone that has some feature (like internet browsing), but you can't use it because your network doesn't provide the feature (or hasn't programed it yet) for your phone (because its not a Nokia), or (until recently) they'd charge you big for using it.

Anyway, more good news: if your photo gets to be among their top 10 outstanding photos, you'll be winning a Smart Bro Prepaid broadband kit bundled with an Asus eeePC laptop :) Now, that makes me want to borrow my Mom's sim for a while. Heheh. :)

Here's a photo of the flyer:

World Record: I'm gonna download Firefox 3 on Download Day...

Download Day 2008

The cute olympic fox is just so adorable!

I'm not exactly into those set-a-world-record gimmiks... I think they've become overrated.

A positive thing about them is that they've set the Philippines (its towns, products and people) on the Guinness map of the world. After all...How big can you make a Christmas lantern? or a pair of shoes? or a local candy bar? How many grills can you get together to cook the longest barbeque? How many sili can you eat under three minutes?

And running after world records does get the publicity for an information campaign (How many people can you get to do 30 minutes of aerobics exercise at Luneta?), or the mechanism for a medical mission that would benefit those who can't afford medical check ups (How many blood identification tests, cholesterol readings, blood pressure readings, and diabetes readings can be done in 24 hours?)

But add the commercial factor, it just gets... overrated and commercial. Sometimes, just trying is enough to get you in the evening news. How many people can you get to kiss at Roxas Blvd. on Valentines Day to sell toothpaste? How many people can you get to dance at Luneta Park to sell milk?

But I think I'll pitch in this one. Firefox is the best and it just keeps getting better! The fact that it's free justifies the saying "The best things in life are free". We wouldn't be using the internet like we do today without it!
